A.C.T.I.O.N. and Rocking The Boat unite!

On the 24th of March A.C.T.I.O.N. went with Rocking the Boat to go rowing on the Bronx River. But before we went out into the water, Tony (Rocking the Boat Job Skills Director) had us play a game that required us to match pictures of the various birds we know about. After the game we seperated into groups, put on our PFDs (Personal Floatation Device) and hit the water. We all felt it was a great experience because it let us see the different birds we have been studying about first hand. Some of the birds we saw while learning to row were Canadian geese, black-backed seaguls, ducks, and kilda birds. It is vital for us to get all the experience required in rowing so we will be able to row ourselves all the way to North Brother Island against natures obstables. Wish us luck on our journeys!!!

PLANet YOUTH

On April 4th, 2008 the Coalition of VOICE that consists of A.C.T.I.O.N, Rocking the Boat, and Youth Ministries of Peace and Justice(YMPJ) had our PLANet YOUTH day. PLANet YOUTH started out at Youth Ministries of Peace and Justice's domain. Where we first ate lunch then participated in an ice breaker game. They educated us on the issues of rainwater and the garbage that gets dumped into our water sources because of it. YMPJ took us to view their water gardens and greenroof located above a church next door.

 

After the tour we moved along to the Concrete Plant Park where we all united with other members of Rocking the Boat to get on row boats that would lead us to their site at Hunts Point Riverside Park. Along the boat ride we learned facts about the Bronx River including some of the issues and successes that surrounds it. At Rocking the Boat's location we united in a circle to hear about their history, what they do to help the Hunts Point area, and the research from experiments they collect about the Bronx River.

After Rocking the Boat was done with their prsentation A.C.T.I.O.N took control and started discussing what VOICE is and its mission. VOICE is a colaboration that works together to make a difference and each organization adds their two cents. Rocking the Boat gathers a lot of the research necessary for certain enviromental campaigns. A.C.T.I.O.N then takes the information and voices in out to the public along with YMPJ. After the information is out in the open we all come together to attend meetings, events, etc. to fight for the cause or difference we want made.

After explaining this colaboration, A.C.T.I.O.N walks down to the Point. We give a brief history of the Point and how it came about.  We also presented on current and past projects/ campaigns we are involved in and the accomplishments we have had. For example the Sheridan campaign, Greenway project, etc. And with this PLANet YOUTH was complete. We wrapped up our presentation answered some questions, heard some comments from either VOICE or participants of the event.
